What is direct discrimination?

A

Treating another person worse because of a protected characteristic. e.g a promoting a male over a female because you think they may go on maternity leave in a few years.

What is indirect discrimination?

A

When an organisation puts a rule or a policy or a way of doing things in place which has a worse impact on someone with a protected characteristic than someone without one. e.g putting an email in the evening or late can impact those with childcare responsibilities.

A

People creating a hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment e.g making offensive comment about someone with a disability

What is victimisation?

A

Victimisation (defined in Section 27 of the Equality Act 2010) takes place where one person treats another less favourably because he or she has asserted their legal rights in line with the Act or helped someone else to do so.

t e.g an employee makes a complaint of sexual harassment at work and is dismissed as a consequence.
