Q

momentum

A
  • A measure of the amount of motion possessed by a moving body. Is the product of mass and velocity (M=mv)
    • An object can only have momentum if its moving
    • The greater the momentum the more force that needs to be applied to either stop or slow it down
If 2 objects collide, the one with the most momentum will be the least affected

A
  • Is the application of a force over a period of time to change the momentum of an object. Is the product of force and time (I=FT)

Q

what can impulse do for movement

A
  • Where F=ma and T is the length of time for which the force is applied to the object:
    Impulse creates momentum
    Changes momentum
    Stopping momentum

Q

increasing momentum

A
  • To maximise the momentum of an object, one must aim to increase both the force and time force is applied
    • Force is increased through effective summation of force and improved strength
    • Time is increased through improved technique and equipment modifications

Q

decreasing momentum

A
  • To reduce the momentum of an object, one typically looks to increase the time component
