Angular Momentum Flashcards
angular momentum
- Is the quantity of angular motion possessed by a rotating body
- Inversely reciprocal (MOI and AV)
If MOI is high AV is low
While the objects mass is important the critical factor in swinging the object is the distribution of the objects mass around the axis of rotation
- Inversely reciprocal (MOI and AV)
moment of inertia
Refers to the resistance of a rotating object to change its state of motion
Mass of object * radius of rotation
If the body’s mass is closer to the axis of rotation, rotation is easier to manipulate which makes moment of inertia smaller and results in an increase in angular velocity
angular velocity
Refers to the rate of change in angular position of body
conservation of angular momentum
Indicates a rotating body will continue to rotate indefinitely unless an external force acts on it
diagram explained (conservation of AM)
once in air angular momentum stays constant (air res is negligible)
when AV high MOI is low
during backflip AV high when tucked so MOI is low
