define quality control
the inspection of products to check they meet the necessary standards
what’s quality assurance?
a system that ensures that quality is guaranteed throughout an organisation from the first stage of the production process to the final stage of customer service
define total quality management (TQM)
an approach to quality assurance that emphasises the involvement of everyone in an organisation in ensuring the quality of the product or service
what is meant by zero defects?
goal of TQM is to make no errors in production so that quality standards are met first time round
what is the advantage of quality control?
inspection is intended to prevent faulty products reaching the customer
give 2 disadvantages of quality control
- individuals are not necessarily encouraged to take responsibility for the quality of their own work
- rejected product is expensive as it has incurred full cost of production but cannot be sold
give two advantages of quality assurance
- costs are reduced because there is less wastage
- helps improve worker motivation as employees have ownership and recognition for their work
