Improving quality and yeild Flashcards
How are quality and yield effected by base dressings
Giving a base dressing of a controlled or slow release fertiliser when transplanting gives a higher yield and better quality as vegetables have access to all the nutrients they need for growth throughout the season.
How are quality and yield effected by top dressings
Vegetables that require lots of nitrogen benefit from a top dressing, as it can leach from the soil. Potatoes need sulphate of ammonia at 50-100g/sq m
How are quality and yield effected by thinning
removing overcrowded seedlings gives the remainder space to develop to maturity. also improves airflow which prevents crops succumbing to botrytis and other fungal infections.
How are quality and yield effected by weed control
weeds compete with young plants for water and nutrients and light. removing them allows more young plants to thrive with access to these things.
How are quality and yield effected by crop support
How are quality and yield effected by irrigation
Watering at the correct stages of a vegetables growth stage allows for strong growth. Watering at the correct time of day allows for good water uptake and less evaporation. Avoiding overhead watering reduces risk of grey mould and other fungal attacks.
How are quality and yield effected by pest control
Protecting crops from pests allows crops to have a higher yield and better quality as they won’t have pest damage.
Prevention is better than cure!
How are quality and yield effected by disease control
Protecting crops from disease allows for a higher yield of crops.
