Impressions Flashcards
What is the preparation involved for taking an impression
Make sure you have all the materials required
Let the patient know what you plan to do
Give the patient a bib and safety glasses
Adjust the chair to a comfortable heigh, tip it back slightly and set the light
Put on your visor, wash your hands and put on gloves
Inspect the patients mouth for anything that may complicate taking impressions
How do you know if the tray fits
The tray should extend to cover all of the teeth and sulk
Make sure the tray extends beyond the last standing tooth
It should sit freely over the teeth, not contacting buccal or lingual surface
Where should you stand when doing a lower impression
In front of the patient approx 7 o’clock position
How should you take the lower impression
Push the left cheek out of the way with the side of the tray and pull the right cheek out with your left fingers to allow the tray to be rotated within the mouth
Position the tray above the teeth and pull the lower lip forward with your left hand as you push the tray slowly down on to the occlusal surfaces
Make sure that material is flowing down beyond the tray periphery into the sulcus then let the lip go
Seat the tray firmly with first two fingers of each hand and ask patient to lift their tongue up and push it forwards
Hold the tray in place securely with your fingers on top of tray and thumbs under the lower border of mandible until the alginate sets
How do you take the lower impressions out
Once set, remove the tray by placing a finger in the sulcus to break the seal and lift the tray upwards
Rotate the tray out of the mouth
Check the quality of the impression
Place lower impression on the bracket table face down
Where do you stand to take the upper impression
From behind the patient
Approx 11 o’clock position
How do you take the upper impression
The tray is rotated in by pushing the right cheek out with the side of the tray as you pull the left cheek out with your left fingers. Rotate the tray in
Hover the tray above the teeth aligned with the upper arch and seat on the back teeth and roll forward on to the front teeth (some clinicians check the front teeth first)
Check that the impression material is flowing up into the upper labial sulcus and hold the upper lip up and forwards
Push the tray up firmly onto the teeth and check there is not too much alginate flowing out at back margin of the tray
Once the impression tray is seated allow the upper lip to drop back into its natural position
Support the tray lightly in the premolar regions
How do you take out the upper impression
Once the impression material is set, place a finger in the upper buccal sulcus to break the seal and remove the tray
As the tray is removed support the alginate in the buccal sulcus to sop it coming away from the impression tray
Check the quality of the impression
Place on bracket table face down
How is occlusal registration monitored
Wax squash bite can be used
How do you decontaminate the impression
Rinse the impression under cold running water
Place in a disinfectant bath for 10 minutes
Remove and rinse thoroughly in cold water
Place damp gauze over the alginate surface and palace intro a sealable plastic bag and label appropriately
What materials and apparatus are required in taking impressions
Alginate, mixing bowl, spatula, water measures, imression trays, tray adhesive, patient eye protection and bib, operator visor, apron and gloves, gauze, sealable plastic bags, labels, sick bowl
Perform and container
