Implantation + early placentation Flashcards
At what point does implantation occur?
6/7 - complete by day 10
What are the stages of implantation
apposition
attachment
penetration
How does oestrogen affect the endometrium?
It causes it to thicken
How does LH affect the endometrium?
Causes release of endometrium
How does progesteron affect the endometrium?
Makes the endometrium receptive to the blastocyst
What are the two layers of the trophoblast?
The inner layer = cytotrophoblastic layer, mononuclear cells
The outer layer = syncytiotrophoblast, multinuclear cells
What is the name given to the inner layer of cells in the trophoblast? Describe them.
Cytotrophoblastic layer, mononuclear cells
What is the name given to the outer layer of cells in the trophoblast? Describe them.
Syncytiotrophoblast, multinuclear cells
How to primary chorionic villi change from primary to tertiary?
Primary villi have a central core of cells (wk2)
They develop mesenchymal cores, becoming secondary villi (wk3)
Mesenchymal cells then differentiate into blood capillaries, becoming tertiary villi (wk4)
How do chorionic villi form the chorion leavae and the chorion frondosum?
Villi on the desidua capularis pole for chorion leavae
Villi adjacent to the desidual plate form the chorion frondosum - forms the placenta along with the desidual plate.
What are the two components of the placenta and from where are they derived?
The maternal portion (from decidual plate) and the foetal portion (from chorion frondosum)
What is meant by the term chorionicity?
Number of gestation sacs
What is holopresencephaly?
Failure of forebrain to divide and develop; associated with midline and facial defects
