immunology Flashcards
what does SPUR stand for ?
S - serious infections = unresponsive to oral antibiotics
P - persistent infections = early structural damage, chronic infections
U - unusual infections = unusual organisms and sites
R - recurrent infections = two major or one major and one minor recurrent minor infections in one years
what is a secondary immunodeficiency disorder?
common, often subtle, often includes more than one component of immune system
what conditions are associated with secondary immune deficiency?
- ageing, measles, anti-cancer agents, leukaemia, malnutritions
what is a primary immunodeficiency disorder (PIDs) - resp ?
- resp are main ones
- pulmonary complications cause significant morbidity and mortality in patients with PIDs
- early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent or at least slow the development of resp complications
what are the upper resp complications of PIDs?
- sinusitis
- otitis media
- laryngeal angioedema
what are the lower resp complications of PIDs?
- malignancies
- interstitial lung diseases
- pneumonia
- bronchitis, bronchiectasis
what is the most frequent associated PID of sinusitis and otitis media?
- primary antibody deficience (PAD)
- selective IgA deficiency
what should be considered in patients with laryngeal angioedema?
- complement system disorders
what is the most frequent manifestations of many PIDs?
pneumonia
what happens as your neutrophils count increases?
your risk of disease decreases
