RNA is protected in virus envelope that’s the black outer ring until a potential host cell is found. The envelope is made up of several proteins including envelope protein blue spikes

Spike glycoprotein which is going to be your red image helps the virus latch on and gain entry into the host cell so the virus can infect the cell this is what we get with COVID which is spike protein
