Immunity And Infection Flashcards
Factors that cause inflammation
Injury, infection, infarction, immune reactions and nutrient deprivation
Vascular Response
Increased blood flow, exudation of protein rich fluid, blood thickens
Cellular Response
Neutrophils emigrate first, monocytes turn to macrophages
Margination, rolling, adhesion, pavementing, chemotaxis, pseudopod formation, amoeboid action and emigration
Phagocytosis
Macrophage destroys foreign material, dies in process, antibody specific
Lymphatic Drainage
Drainage of tissue fluid, oedema containing antigens and products of inflammation e.g. femoral triangle swell due to fluid building up and B + T cells being produced
White Blood Cell Count
If above 10,000 mm^3 inflammation is occuring
Bone Marrow
Red produces WBC, RBC and platelets
Thymus Gland
Develops T cells, larger in children
Lymph Nodes
Store immune cells close to blood vessels
Spleen/tonsils
Spleen stores RBC + WBC, tonsils store immunity cells
Cell Mediated Response
Immature T cells released from bone marrow, matured by thymus gland, CD8 + CD4 combine to make T Killer Cells which phagocytise antigens, dead tissue, pre cancerous cells
Humoral Response
Mature B cells released from red bone marrow with antibodies attached, CD4 remove antibodies from B cells and use to fight infection
Agglutination
Invading cells are stuck together and engulfed as one
Precipitation
Antigen and antibody combine and become insoluble
Neutralisation
Make antigens incapable of attaching to anymore cells
