Bone Structure And Healing Flashcards
Boxers Fracture
Fracture to the 4th and 5th metatarsal
Colle’s Fracture
Fracture to the distal forearm
Displaced Fracture
Complete fracture causing the bone to be in two pieces
Comminuted Fracture
When lots of breaks occur in many bones
Impacted Fracture
Broken bone ends are forced together by force of the injury
Potts Fracture
Malleolus fracture
Trabecular Bone
Spongy Bone found in epiphysis of long bones
Cortical bone
Compact bone that form a protective layer around the bone
Osteoclasts
Bone cell clearers, clear dead bone cells, if osteoporosis healthy bone is cleared as well
Osteoblasts
Bone cell builders, form new bone cells
Osteoprogenitor Cells
Stem cells of bone, form osteoblasts and osteocytes
Osteocytes
Bone cells, mature osteoblasts trapped in the bone matrix and maintain bone strength and health
Bone Healing Process
Haemotoma - inflammation, new capillaries, bone cells die
Fibrocartilagenous Callus - fibroblasts lay down collagen, chondroblasts produce fibrocartilage
Bony Callus - osteoblasts secrete spongy bone
Remodelling - compact bone replaces spongy, surface is remodelled
Green stick
Splintering on the side of the bone
Compression
Bone is crushed e.g vertebrae
