IMMUNITY Flashcards
1
Q
PATHOGENS - CAUSES DISEASE (4)
A
- bacteria
- viruses
- fungi
- protoctists
2
Q
BACTERIA
A
- they are prokaryotic organisms
- no necleus
- unicellular-one cell
- some are harmful soem are useful
- feed on lactose sugar and produces lactic acid (dead organismes)
- make things turn from milk to yogart
3
Q
VIRUSES
A
- non-living organisms (they can reproduce unless invading a living cell)
- small particles
- attacts cells
- causes HIV and flu
4
Q
ANTIBODY
A
proteins made by white blood cells
attach to foreigh cells
helps destroy them
5
Q
ANTIBIOTICS
A
a drug that kills bacteria without harming other cells
6
Q
WHAT IS A PATHOGEN
A
an organism that causes disease, they may inclued fungi, bacteria, protoctists and viruses.
7
Q
IMMUNITY
A
-if someone is imune to a diesease it means that there is a memory cell in their body.
8
Q
MEMORY CELL
A
- memory cells are a type of lymphocyte
- when your infected with a pathogen the lymphocytes make anitbodies specific to the antigen shape
- the pathogens are then killed this is called a memory cell
9
Q
WHAT IS AN ANTIGEN
A
- microbes have chemicals on their surfaces called antigens
- every type of microbe have different antigens
- white blood cells>lymphocytes>antibodies which then fit onto the antigens
10
Q
WHAT ARE INVOLVED WITH IMMUNITY
A
white blood cells
- lymphocytes
- phagocytes
