Ignaz Semmelweis & Louis Pasteur Flashcards
What did semmelweis observe
That women whose babies were delivered by midwives were much less likely to die from infection than those delivered by medical students
Why did women get infected easier from medical students than midwives
And what did ignas suggest
Because medical students deliver babies straight after they had been dissecting bodies
If the students washed their hand he though they would reduce risk of infection
How was ignaz rejected
He was regarded as a crank and a fanatic and said to be mentally instable
What did Pasteur disprove
The very long standing theory ‘spontaneous generation’
How did Pasteur first start figuring out about germs
He was asked by a brewing. Implant to help find out why their alcoholic was going bad
He developed a theory germs were the cause of the problem and microbes were in the brew
What’s the pasteuring theory
Killing germs by boiling liquid
What was the four main things Louis Pasteur did
Discover the germ theory
Invented process of pasteurisation
Saved millions of lives
Made many more vaccines (building on Jenners work)
How did Pasteur save the silk industry
He worked out silkworms had infections transmitted by parasites
So he isolated the infectious silkworms
What did Robert Koch do leading on from Pasteur
Stained bacteria so it was easier to see and observe the type of bacteria under a microscope
Then identified the bacteria that causes some deadly diseases such as Cholera
