Idiopathic thrombocytopenia Purpura Flashcards
Idiopathic thrombocytopenia Purpura
Thrombocytopenia resulting from autoimmune destruction of platelets with or without suppression of thrombopoiesis
Platelets
150-400
ITP
incidence
In adults ITP is usually chronic causing mild to sphere thrombocytopenia
Only occasionally do patients develop bleeding that require hospitalization
Women outnumber men in incidents by a ratio of three to one
Lab and diagnostics for ITP
Bone marrow analysis
Low platelet count with other causes of thrombocytopenia ruled out; there may be a history of easy bruising or bleeding- gums and kidneys first
Management of ITP
May not be necessary until platelets less than 20
High dose quartercoaster steroids may help elevate the platelet count within 2 to 3 days
IV Gamma globulin usually produces a response within 2 to 3 days
Platelet transfusion‘s may occasionally benefit
Thrombocytopenic precautions
Avoid consumption (increase fiber, laxatives)
No flossing
No shaving
Cold pressure for five minutes or more for cuts, line insertion
Heparin induced thrombocytopenia purpura management
Argatroban
Lepirudin
