What is ideology?
A set of political beliefs which belong to a group of people.
What are the key areas of ideology that we look at?
Heteronormativity, capitalism, communism, socialism, patriarchy, feminism, facism, left wing, right wing, racism, family values, the American Dream, sexuality and religion.
What is an explicit ideology?
When the film is produced with a very clear message of expressing the ideology so that the audience knows exactly what the message is. Usually films that do this portray ideologies that go against the accepted view by educating or persuading a different view.
What is an implicit ideology?
The filmmaker will use subtle nuances and hints for the viewer with the expectation that they will ultimately understand the message. Implicit ideologies can only be seen through a deeper level of interpretation.
What are dominant or ruling ideologies of society called?
Hegemony
What are subversive ideologies?
They go against the ‘norm’ and accepted views.
