Identity Flashcards
The looking glass self (Theorist)
Charles Cooley, We see ourselves through someone else’s perceptions
- how we appear
- how we think others judge
- how we feel about those judgements
Dramaturgical Self
We are (un)consciously preparing and acting for an audience - Sincere, insincere performances, all of which are socially constructed
Virtual and Actual Identities
When our desired attributes and demonstrated attributes don’t line up, Stigma emerges.
Physical Abnormalities: amputation
Character Blemishes: morality, addiction flaws
Tribal Stigma: Race, tribal, heritage
Discredited and Discreditable Identities
Discredited: Visible stigma, largely exposed
Discreditable: Not visible, managing concealment
Identity politics
Social movements led by minority groups whose needs aren’t met by democratic nation
Postmodern identity
Culture of Lack, Commodity Fetishism
We are made to believe that we are always lacking, and consuming for our identities becomes more important than our relationships
