Gendering Flashcards
Define gender, sex, sexuality
Gender: How you identify (female, male, queer)
Sex: Biological characteristics (genitalia)
Sexuality: Who you’re into (hetero, homo)
Sociolisation
Lifelong learning process by learning what is normal as well as different values we carry
Doing Gender
We try and achieve dimensions of gender, based on what others believe gender to be. (Gender performativity)
Patriarchy
Dominance of men over parts of society.
Patriarchal Bargain
If women want to ascend to same or higher levels as men, they need to be willing to emphasise their feminine characteristics
Hegemonic Patriarchy
‘Ideal’ form of masculinity within a society
Institutionalised and Individualised Sexism
Institutionalised: Policies and procedures discriminate against women (eg. removing sexual violence services, even though people affected are mostly women)
Individualised: Everyday sexism
Intersectionality
Perceptions of gender discrimination vary across cultures and races
Rape Culture
Sexual assault and harassment is trivialised, excused and condoned.
Trivialised: “Boys should grow up”
Excused: “Girls shouldn’t be drinking anyway”
Condoned: “Police were aware, but didn’t take action”
