Identify and explain two ways in which the family may differ according to ethnicity Flashcards
point 1
Different ethnicities have different types of relationships and this effects their marriage rate
example 1
Caribbean relationships are characterised by a low rate of marriage. Research carried out at Essex University in 2000 indicates that only 39% of British-born African-Caribbean adults under the age of 60 are in a formal marriage compared with 60% of white adults. Additionally Caribbean’s are less likely to live with a partner than whites.
explain 1
This shows that the family might differ according to ethnicity as relationships within the family are completely different for whites than Caribbean’s as whites are more likely to be married and arguably have stronger relationships
Point 2
There’s a difference in family structures between different ethnicities
example 2
Berthoud found Pakistani and Bangladeshi women mainly look after the home and family full-time and traditionally they have high fertility rates, this means the traditional ‘cereal packet’ family is more likely to be found among this ethnic group than any other.
explain 2
This shows that the family may differ according to ethnicity as the traditional cereal packet family is now found in Pakistani and Bangladeshi families more than any other ethnicity which shows family structure varies between different ethnicities.
intro
In different ethnicities there is no longer completely old fashioned values and each ethnic group now has more modern individualism which means there is now many differences in the family between different ethnicities.
