One type of family diversity is the beanpole family which argues that there are strong intergenerational links in contemporary British families. This is partly because people are living longer and therefore there tends to be more families with three or even four generations alive than in the past.

The beanpole family is an example of family diversity because previously, when the normal family type was the nuclear family, intergenerational links would be weak and horizontal links would be strong, whereas this is now not the case.

Family diversity refers to a broad range of characteristics or dimensions on which families vary, along with a recognition that there are a multitude of different family types that function effectively. In modern society there are now multiple types of family diversity.
