Identify and explain two reasons for the growth of households containing one person Flashcards
point 1
One reason is the increase in divorce rates is the amount of young single people in their twenties and thirty’s who have yet to marry.
example 1
According to Social Trends (2006) there was a doubling in the proportion of young people aged 25 to 44 and men aged 45 to 64 living alone between 1986/7 and 2005/5. This may be due to the trend towards later marriage.
explain 1
This has increased the number of households containing one person because there are now more single young people that require living in a single person household as they can concentrate wholeheartedly on work.
point 2
Another reason is the increase in divorcees in their forties and fifties due to the increase in the divorce rate.
example 2
The divorce rate (the number of divorces per 1000 of the adult population) is currently 11.1. It is one of the highest divorce rates in the world. This means approximately 40% of marriages now end in divorce. This is due to many reasons such as women’s emancipation, secularisation and legal changes.
explain 2
This has increased the number of households containing one person because divorcees tend to live alone following their divorce and the increase in the divorce rate has led to more and more of them.
intro
Single-person households are becoming more common. According to government statistics, the proportion of one person households rose from 18 % in 1971 to 29 % in 2005. 1 in 3 households are now single person households.
