How do you test for hydrogen?
hold a burning splint held at the open end of a test tube of the gas, a squeaky pop will be heard if hydrogen is present
Why is a (squeaky) pop sound heard when testing for hydrogen?
Hydrogen burns rapidly with a squeaky pop sound
How do you test for oxygen?
Insert a glowing splint into a test tube of a gas, if oxygen is present, the splint will relight
What is limewater?
an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide
How do you test for carbon dioxide?
When carbon dioxide is shaken with or bubbled through limewater, the limewater turns milky (cloudy)
How do you test for chlorine?
put damp litmus paper into test tube with gas, if chlorine is present, the litmus paper is bleached and turns white
if damp blue litmus paper is used, the litmus paper turns red first before it is bleached
