Ecomienda System
Date: 1565-1609
What: This was the right to extract tribute and labor from the natives on large areas of island in the new world.
Why: This was significant because it showed that the Spanish had dominance over the natives. They now had the right to treat them as slaves therefore they had more contact with sure had a huge significance in their downfall due to diseases.
Colombian Exchange
Date: Around the 1540s
What: This was the introduction of new crops to Europe from the Americas and introduction of old crops to the new world.
Why: The significance of this is that the introduction of some of the new crops like potatoes allowed it so that there was a higher lifespan. This also improved the health of some individuals in Europe because they were not being as malnourished.
Reformation
Date: October 31, 1517
What: This is the change in religious thoughts, beliefs, and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. This began when Martin Luther posted his 95 thesis on the date mentioned above.
Why: This was significant because this was an event that delayed English exploration to the new world because they had other matters to deal with back at home.
John Calvin
Date: Event around 1517
What: John Calvin was a English Reformer just like Luther. He took it a step further by saying that people that are made are destined to go to hell or heaven. This was known as predestination.
Why: This was significant because the puritan belief branched off of Calvin’s Ideas. Therefore this helped the settlement of the start of the new world because Puritans were the first groups to settle America
Jamestown
Date: 1607
What: This was the first permanent English settlement in the new world.
Why: It ended the worry at home. This was a symbol that they moved on and that they were ready to move on.
Headright System
Date: 1612
What: This said that whoever went to the Americas would be granted 50 acres of land.
Why: England at the time was being very overpopulated so the headright system encouraged for people in england to get the hell out of London so that they wouldn’t be so overpopulated
Religious Toleration Acts
Date: 1649
What: It is also known as the act concerning religion. This claimed that they would be tolerable of any religion no matter what
Why: This encouraged people to move to the Americas especially around the area of maryland.
Bacon’s Rebellion
Date: 1675
What: Sir Francis Bacon asked the governor of the new world if he would grant him to make a militia to attack the Indians. The Indians and white men were fighting. The governor said so which angered him. He made a militia anyways but made it to attack the governor.
Why: This signifies that there was a lot of political struggle in the new world and that order in the new world was considered to be very weak.
Mayflower Compact
When: 1620
What: This was created by the pilgrims so that they could establish their own form of government
Why: This signifies that the people in the new world could establish their own government without the aid of the British.
John Winthrop
When: 1630
What: He was the governor of the puritans in the new world who believed in “A city on a hill.” He implemented his church teachings in political matters.
Why: This was significant because he remained in office as the governor for about 20 years when the average term lasts for only about a month. That means that he was very popular with the puritans.
Roger Williams
When: 1662
What: He was a separatist who was forced to leave the puritans because he had different beliefs. He believed that the Church and State should be separated
Why: He was the one that settled Rhode Island because he left.
Anne Hutchenson
When: 1662
What: She was a Woman who lived in the same time era as Roger Williams. She believed that some of the church teachings contradicted. She said she talks to god
Why: Showed that Women had a voice
King Phillips War
When: 1676
What: A war that broke out between the colonists and the Indians. There were high casualties on both sides
Why: This was significant because this was the first war that they fought using modern day tactics.
English Civil War
When: 1642-1649
What: This was a war that broke out in england between the Cavaliers and the Roundheads. The roundheads consisted mostly of puritans. This war ended when Oliver Cromwell became the prime minister in England.
Why: This war halted exploration and also halted goods from being hauled to the new world.
Quakers
When: This whole damn time
What: They were a group of people similar to the puritans except that they did not believe in the concept of predestination. They wrote along with William Penn the charter of liberties that made a representative assembly that limited the authority of the leader.
Why: This was significant because they made a government that is similar to ours where we have several branches that limits the authority of the president.
