ID & Sexual health Flashcards
What group of bacteria is linezolid effective against
Gram +VE bacteria
Examples of bacteria that Linezolid is effective against
MSRA, VRE, GISA
Mechanism of action of Linezolid
Bacteriostatic - Inhibits protein synthesis by preventing the formaiton of the 70 S ribosome
(Binds to 23s ribosome preventing it binding to the 50s ribosome)
Adverse effects of Linezolid
1) Thrombocytopaenia (Especially for use >14 days)
2) Serotonin syndrome if combined with serotonergic agents (Inhibits MAO)
Linezolid belongs to what class of Antibiotics
Theazolidinone
Infectious causes of SIADH
1) Pneumonia
2) TB
How does C.diff Spread
Faeco-oral route
What type of bacteria is C.diff
Gram +ve Rod, Spore forming, Anaerobic
How do antibiotics inhibit cell wall synthesis
1) Inhibiting the linking of peptidoglycans
2) Inhibiting the synthesis of peptido glycans
Examples of Antibiotic classess that inhibit cell wall synthesis by inhibiting peptidoglycan linking
Penicillins
Carbopenems
Cephalosporins - Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime
Examples of antibiotic classes that inhibit cell wall synthesis by inhibiting peptigoglycan synthesis
Glycopeptides - Vancomycin
How would you further categorise antibiotics that inhibit ribosomal formation
Those that inhibit the 50s subunit vs those that inhibit the 30s Subunit
What antibiotic classes (Examples) inhibit the 50s Ribosome from forming
Linezolid
macrolides - Erythromycin, azithromycin, Clarithromycin
Chloramphenicol
Clindamycin
What antibiotic classes inhibit the 30s Ribosomal subunit from forming
Tetracycline - Doxycycline
Aminoglycosides - Amikacin, Gentamicin
Antibiotic class that inhibits DNA Synthesis
Quinolones - ciprofloxacin ((VIA inhibiting DNA Tropoisomerase activation)
Antibiotic class that damages DNA
Metronidazole
Antibiotic type that inhibits RNA Synthesis
Rifampicin
Antibiotic classes that inhibit Folic acid production
Sulphonamides
Trimethoprim
