  • prolonged mechanical ventilation
  • unable to expectorate copious secretions
  • unable to protect upper airways
  • upper airway obstruction
  • protect from aspiration

Mechanical Ventilation is a method to mechanically assist or replace spontaneous breathing.
- Positive Pressure Ventilation: gas is pushed into the trachea/lungs
- Negative Pressure: gas is essentially sucked into the lungs
