Set cylinder up BEFORE to placing it close to pt.
Valve opened and flow selected away from patient
These are the times ignition is common
Place it in a specific holder
Bottom of bed, back of wheelchairs
Avoid placing it on the bed.
How to prevent fire in ICU
Ensure safe use of electronic kit and regular maintenance
Training in safe use of oxygen cylinders
Orderly stacking of waste/cardboard/flammables
Adequate fire doors, ventilation and escapre routes
The Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (SALG) recommendations for oxygen cylinders?
1) at high concentration and pressure O2 is dangerous - treat with respect
2) handle cyclinder with care in designatefd holders
3) regular training in fire safety and prevention in the areas that they work
4) Every hospital should have an ICU/theatres evacuation policy
5) . Any problesm with cylinders and kit must be reported imediately to the gas supplier and MHRA
Managing a fire in ICU
Goals:Keep pts and staff safe
Manage the fire
Identify the cause and adress prevention
RACER
-Rescue - get patients and staff from danger
Safe disconnection of lines and tubing
Hand ventilate
-Alert - Raise alarm, 5555, co-workers etc
-Contain - close doors and windows, turn off gases
-Extinguish - DoH say leave the fire, close doors, await fire service Only attempt to fight if small
Use the appropriate extinguisher
-Relocate: via fire exits —> visitors, stable, unstable, staff horizontal evacuation +/- vertical evad Stay in evacuation points
