Ice and Rain Protection Flashcards
Ice and Protection
Which elements have an anti-ice protection ?
5
- Engines
- Wings
- Pack inlets
- Flight deck windows
- Probes
Ice and Rain Protection
Is automatic ice detection always functional ?
NO
It is inhibited on the ground below 75 kts.
Ice and Rain Protection
How many ice detection probes are there ?
2
Ice and Rain Protection
How are the engine cores and cowl inlets ice-protected ?
By using bleed air.
Not a bleed-less aircraft after all !
Ice and Rain Protection
Apart from bleed air, do the engines have additional ice protection ?
Yes, the engine EEC also automatically adjusts idle to prevent engine icing.
Ice and Rain Protection
When would the engines anti-ice valves automatically close ?
- During START,
- Bleed air overtemperature,
- Bleed air overpressure,
- Bleed air leak,
- Engine FIRE SWITCH is pulled.
Ice and Rain Protection
WAI :
How are wing leading edges ice-protected ?
ELECTRICALLY.
Thermal anti-icing mats on 4 midwing leading edge slats.
3 thermal anti-icing mats on each slat.
Ice and Rain Protection
What happens if one thermal anti-icing mat fails on one side ?
To maintain aerodynamics stability, the wing anti-ice system would automatically de-power the opposite thermal mat.
Ice and Rain Protection
In-flight, can wing anti-ice be manually operated ?
YES
Positioning the wing anti-ice selector ON powers the system anytime TAT < 25°C
Ice and Rain Protection
Do all flight deck windows have anti-fogging protection ?
YES, all flight deck windows have interior anti-fogging protection.
Ice and Rain Protection
Do all flight deck windows have anti-icing protection ?
NO, only the L/R FWD windows have exterior anti-ice protection.
Ice and Rain Protection
When is the TAT probe electrically heated ?
When the aircraft is in flight.
Ice and Rain Protection
When are the pitot probes electrically heated ?
When either engine is operating.
How many ice detection systems are fitted to the aircraft?
Two
When is automatic ice detection inhibited on the ground?
Below 75kts
