Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

Symptoms
A
pain, bloody diarrhoea and ulcers

Ulcerative colitis
A
signs: tender abdomen, tachycardia, pyrexia and extra intestinal manifestations.
Inflammation confined to colon and is continuous

Crohn’s disease
A
can affect any part of GI tract (normally ileum and colon) and is discontinuous

Treatments
A
steroids, mesalazines, immunosupressants and bilogics (anti-TNF)
Need to operate in an emergency/ medical treatment fails:
Protolectomy with ileostomy for UC
Ileocaecal resection, colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis or prolectomy with ileostomy for Crohn’s
