IBC Cheat Sheet - STUDY FOR PPD Flashcards
IBC Chapter 3
Use and Occupancy Groups
Assembly Occupancy Groups
A’s, Civic, social, or religious places of congregation
A-1 Fixed Seating
movie theaters, concert halls, theaters
A-2 Food or drink consumption
restaurants, bars, clubs
A-3 Other
places of worship, community spaces, libraries, art museums, bowling alleys, gyms
A-4 Indoor sports
arenas, stadiums, swimming pools
A-5 outdoor activity
stadiums, amuseument parks
Business Occupancy Group
B. Office or professional service
Education Occupancy Group
E. Educational spaces used by 6 or more people for classes up to 12th grade
Factory Occupancy Group
F’s, fabrication finishing manufacturing
F-1
Factory, moderate hazard
F-2
Factory, low hazard. manufucatring materials are noncombustiblew
High Hazard Occupancy Groups
H’s. Uses in this category require consultation with bldng officials early in the design process.
H-1 through H-4 vary by type of material and specific risks posed
Institutional Occupancy Types
I’s. occupancies where individuals have special restrictions that influence their ability to take care of themselves in an emergency
I-1
16+ people living under 24 hour custodial care (assisted living, rehab) individuals do not require assistance to respond to emergencies
I-2
5+ people living under 24 hour medical care (hospital, nursing home). individuals requrie assistrance to respond to emergencies
I-3
5+ people living under 24 restraint or security (prisons)
I-4
5+ People living under less than 24 hour custodial care (day care)
Mercantile Occupancy Groups
M’s. retail spaces
Residential Occupancy Groups
R’s. spaces for sleeping
R-1
2+ sleeping units, transient occupants, staying 30 days or less. (hotel, motel)
R-2
2+ sleeping units, permanent occupants (dorms, apartments)
R-3
less than 2 sleeping units, permanent occupants (single family home, duplex)
R-4
5-16 people living under 24 hour custodial care (rehab, assisted livign, but too small to qualify as I-1)
Storage occupancy groups
S’s. sotrage spaces that are not classified as hazardous
S-1
Storage, moderate hazard
S-2
storage, low hazard. non-combustible
Utility and Miscellaneous Occupancy Groups
u’s . includes buildngs of accessory nature. not a catch-all, but for specific items (ie retaining wall)

Special Uses and Occupancies
Chapter 4, 402
Covered and open malls
Chapter 4, 403
High Rise Buildings = +75’ tall
Super High Rise= +420’ tall
Chapter 4, 404
Atriums
Chapter 4, 405
Underground buildings
Chapter 4, 406
motor vehicle related occupancies
Chapter 4, 407
Group I-1 Hospitals
Chapter 4, 408
group i-3 prisons
chapter 4, 424
children’s play structures
Chapter 5, IBC
General building heights and areas
building area requirements
excludes exterior walls
excludes shaft areas and shaft walls
inclusive of areas under building overhangs
gross area
measured from exterior face of walls
building height
measured to average height of highest roof (ie. mid slope)
grade plane
reference plane represnting average grade levels along the exterior edge of the building
basement
cannot be greater than 12’ above the grade plane at any point
mezzanine
intermediate floor level inserted between larger floor plates. limited to 1/3 area of the larger floor plate below. floor area does not contribute to floor area, building area, number of stories
required separation of occupancies
dictates fire resistance rating required between two occupancies
if occupancies are not separated, allowable height and construction type is governed by the criteria of the more restrictive occupancy group
Chapter 6, IBC
Types of Constrution
TYPE I (A+B)
All noncumbustible materials (masonry, concrete, steel)
passive fire protection of all elements
Type A - 3 hr fire rating for structural systems and bearing walls
Type B - 2 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls
TYPE II (A+B)
All noncombustible materials (masonry, concrete, steel)
active or passive fire protection of all elements
Type A - 1 hr fire rating
Type B - 0 hr fire rating
TYPE III (A+B)
Exterior walls are noncombustible materials, interior materials can be anything code approved
TYPE IV (HT)
Exterior walls are noncombustible, structural frame is heavy timber construction, interior bldng elements are solid or laminated wood
TYPE V
Exterior walls, structural frame, and interior materials can be anything code approved
Type A - 1 hr fire rating
Type B - 0 hr fire rating
Chapter 7, IBC
Fire and Smoke Protection Features
fire wall
produces complete fire separation between buildings and construction types. (3 hrs is good rule of thumb)
fire barrier
less restrictive fire separation of usually 2 hrs. used in diff instances: separate diff occupancies, divide single occ into fire areas, sep interior exit stairs from remainder of egress, surround shaft enclosure
fire partition
least restrictive type of fire separation, generally 1 hr. used primarily to separate dwelling units and corridors
smoke barrier
continuous vertical or horizontal membrane. designed to resist passage of smoke, 1 hr fire rating
smoke partition
similar to smoke barrier, no fire rating
Chapter 8, IBC
Interior Finishes
Flame spread index
Class A - least combustible
Class B
Class C - most combustible
Chapter 9, IBC
Fire protection systems
active fire protection systems
sprinklers
passive fire protection systems
materials with inherent fire protection used
Chapter 10, IBC
Means of Egress
egress
continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from occupied space to public way
egress sizing
not sprinklered: 0.3 x occupant load =. width required
sprinklered: 0.2 x occupant load. = width required
