I2 LT1 Flashcards
What is an arc fault?
Unintentional arcing condition in a circuit.
What is Leakage Current?
A current that takes a path to ground outside the regular circuit path.
What kind of GFCI protection is required for outlets near sinks, wash basins, bathtubs, or shower stalls in dwellings?
Class A GFCI
What would happen if a leakage current to ground occurs in a circuit?
Breaker or receptacle would trip
What do GFCI testers allow electricians to do in addition to testing at the breaker or receptacle?
Test the installation at the device end.
What is the purpose of an arc fault circuit interrupter?
Detect and de-energize circuits with arc faults.
What is arcing?
Luminous discharge of electric energy across an insulating medium.
What does an Outlet Branch Circuit-Type Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter do?
Provides series and parallel arc-fault protection to downstream wiring and series arc-fault protection to upstream wiring.
How close to sinks, wash basins, bathtubs, or shower stalls do outlets need to be to require Class A GFCI protection?
Within 1500mm
According to the Canadian Electrical Code since 2015, where is arc-fault circuit protection required?
Most wiring in dwelling units and residential occupancies.
How much greater in magnitude is the current that causes an AFCI to trip than a GFCI?
Hundreds if not thousands of times
What temperatures do electric arcs operate at?
2700C to 8400C (5,000F to 15,000F)
What is an Overcurrent Device?
A device capable of automatically opening a circuit under overload and short circuit conditions.
What is the purpose of a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)?
Compare current leaving to current returning to breaker.
What type of arc fault is difficult to detect and extinguish?
Glowing arc fault
