Hypoparathyroidism Flashcards
What does Parathyroid hormone do (PTH)
pulls calcium out of bones and into bloodstream (increases calcium in the blood)
What does the PTH cause
causes kidneys to reabsorb more calcium and release vitamin D which allows for absorption of calcium
When blood calcium levels decrease this stimulates
the release of PTH from parathyroid gland
What is Hypoparathyroidism
decreased secretion of PTH by parathyroid gland W
What causes Hypoparathyroidism
damage to the parathyroid gland during thyroidectomy or pancreatitis
-renal failure may also cause underproduction of PTH
What does Hypoparathyroidism result in
- hypocalcemia
- hyperphosphatemia (elevated phosphate)
Most important S/S of Hypoparathyroidism
- numbness/tingling
- positive Chvostek’s sign
- positive Trousseau’s sign
Other S/S of Hypoparathyroidism
- muscle cramps
- tetany/seizure
- dysrhythmias
Treatment for Hypoparathyroidism
- calcium gluconate
- calcium/vitamin D supplements
- phosphate binders (reduces phosphate)
What should be implemented for Hypoparathyroidism
implement seizure precaution
What diet should a Hypoparathyroidism pt be on
high calcium, low phosphorus diet
What should phosphate binders be given with
meals
