S/S Hypokalemia
A
- dysrhythmias–> ST depression, flat T-wave
- paresthesia
- decrease GI motility
- diminished breath sounds

What causes hypokalemia?
A
- addison’s tissue
- damage acidosis
- oliguria
- blood transfusion (cause by breakdown of blood)

NI/TX for hypokalemia
A
- monitor all system
- discontinue IV K+
- for renal impaired–> administer Na+ polystyrene sulfonate ( kayexalate) {promote Na+ absorption and K+ excretion}
- administer IV-Ca+gluconate to avert myocardial excitability
- IV-> hypertonic glucose (5% dextose to remove excess K+ into cell)
