What causes hypokalemia?

A

addison’s tissue
damage acidosis
oliguria
blood transfusion (cause by breakdown of blood)

NI/TX for hypokalemia

A

monitor all system
discontinue IV K+
for renal impaired–> administer Na+ polystyrene sulfonate ( kayexalate) {promote Na+ absorption and K+ excretion}
administer IV-Ca+gluconate to avert myocardial excitability
IV-> hypertonic glucose (5% dextose to remove excess K+ into cell)
