  • dysrhythmias–> ST depression, flat T-wave
  • paresthesia
  • decrease GI motility
  • diminished breath sounds

What causes hypokalemia?

A
  • addison’s tissue
  • damage acidosis
  • oliguria
  • blood transfusion (cause by breakdown of blood)

Q

NI/TX for hypokalemia

A
  • monitor all system
  • discontinue IV K+
  • for renal impaired–> administer Na+ polystyrene sulfonate ( kayexalate) {promote Na+ absorption and K+ excretion}
  • administer IV-Ca+gluconate to avert myocardial excitability
  • IV-> hypertonic glucose (5% dextose to remove excess K+ into cell)
