Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia
anxiety, agitation, confusion, cool clammy skin, diaphoresis, seizure, decreased visual acuity, blindness, abnormal/hostile behavior, tachycardia, hypertension, dizziness, headache, weakness
Differentials of hypoglycemia
hypoxia, seizure, stroke, brain trauma, alcohol intoxication, toxin/substance abuse, medication effect/overdose.
Walk through the hypoglycemia protocol BLS to ALS
DRABCDE, oxygen, BGL, if pt. alert and able to maintain airway give oral glucose 15g tube, est. IV, cardiac monitor, give dextrose 10% 100ml bolus, repeat in 2 minutes if needed, repeat blood glucose after all medications every 10 minutes.
What can you give if dextrose is unavailable?
Glucagon 1 mg IM.
