Hyperthermia Protocol Flashcards
Factors that affect thermoregulation through heat loss mechanisms
fatigue, lack of sleep, dehydration,
Cognitive characteristics associated with heat stress include
time distortion, memory impairment, deterioration in attention
Signs and symptoms of hyperthermia
AMS, unconciousness, hot dry sweaty skin, pale or clammy skin, hypotension, seizure, nausea, weakness, dizziness, syncope, rapid shallow respirations.
Differential Diagnosis for hyperthermia:
fever, dehydration, medications, hyperthyroidism, DTs, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, CNS lesions and tumors.
Run through the BLS protocol for hyperthermia protocol?
DRABCDE, oxygen, temperature, remove constrictive clothing, air condition, ice packs to pits groin and neck, BGL, if pt. not nauseated then PO hydration can be started at 10ml/kg for minimum of 15-20 min.
Run through the ALS protocol for hyperthermia?
Pt. on cardiac monitor, IV, NS fluid at rate of 200 ml/kg. Reassess for signs of fluid overload. 12 lead.
What drugs can elevate body temperature?
cocaine, amphetamines, and salicylates
What temperature does sweating stop?
104.0 F
