Hypoglycaemia Flashcards
what glucose levels indicate hypoglycaemia
<4mmol/L
who has different diagnostic levels for hypoglycaemia
diabetes = <3.5 paeds = <2.5
what are the symptoms of hypoglycaemia
adrenergic - tremors, palpitations, sweating, hunger
Neuroglycopaenic - confusion + seizures
what are some causes of hypoglycaemia in diabetics and non diabetics
diab - inappropriate insulin, exercise, excessive alcohol
non d - fasting, organ failure, drugs
what should be measured to help differentiate the cause of a hypoglycaemia
insulin - should be low, if raised it suggests exogenous insulin (insulinoma)
C peptide
ketones
what is important to measure in premature jittery babies
may be hypoglycaemic due to insuff glycogen/fat stores, will improve with feeding
measure ketones - should be +ve, if -ve then suggests metabolic disorder
what drugs cause high exogenous insulin
sulphonylureas
what do blood results showing low glucose, high insulin and high c peptide suggest
sulphonylureas
insulinoma
islet cell hyperplasia
what do blood results showing low glucose, high insulin and low c peptide suggest
factitious insulin
