A
  • Primigravida
  • Old maternal age
  • Anaemia and asthenia
  • Anxiety and emotional distress
  • Induced labour
  • Malpresentations, malpositions and cephalopelvic disproportion

Signs

A

Labour prolonged
- Slow cervical dilation
- Membranes usually intact
- More susceptible for retained placenta + PPH

Diagnosis

A
  • Palpation and timing the length of contractions
  • Repeated vaginal examination will demonstrate a cervix which fails to dilate

Treatment

A
  • Re-hydration
  • Relaxation = epidurial
  • Rupture of membranes
  • Syntocinon: contains both oxytocin and ADH (vasopressin)
