A
Contractions of the uterus are irregular, infrequent and ineffectual

A
Primary inertia - from start
Secondary inertia - developed after period of good uterine contractions

Risk factors
A
- Primigravida
- Old maternal age
- Anaemia and asthenia
- Anxiety and emotional distress
- Induced labour
- Malpresentations, malpositions and cephalopelvic disproportion

Signs
A
Labour prolonged
- Slow cervical dilation
- Membranes usually intact
- More susceptible for retained placenta + PPH

Diagnosis
A
- Palpation and timing the length of contractions
- Repeated vaginal examination will demonstrate a cervix which fails to dilate

Treatment
A
- Re-hydration
- Relaxation = epidurial
- Rupture of membranes
- Syntocinon: contains both oxytocin and ADH (vasopressin)

3 every 10 minutes
