Definition
A
Benign breast tumours that arise from the proliferation of stromal and epithelial connective tissue cells within the breast tissue.

Epidemiology and Risk factors
A
- 14-35 years
- Pre-menopausal
- Pregnancy
- Use of COCP
- Presence of mediator complex subunit 12 (MED12) gene

Signs
A
Mass:
- Smooth
- Rubbery
- Mobile
- Regular borders

Symptoms
A
Painless breast lump
Usually unilateral

Diagnosis
A
- Mammogram: well-circumscribed, oval hypodense or isodense mass, may contain calcifications
- Breast USS: well-circumscribed, round to ovoid, or macrolobulated mass with generally uniform hypoechogenicity
Consider: Core needle biopsy: stromal and epithelial cells

Treatment
A
No treatment as often regress spontaneously
Surgery removed for cosmetic reasons if large:
- Lumpectomy: surgical removal of the fibroadenoma
- Cryoablation : cryoprobe used to freeze and destroy the fibroadenoma
