A
  1. increased potassium intake
  2. potassium release from cells
  3. decreased potassium excretion
  4. drugs - B blockers, NSAIDS, ACE inhibitors, K sparing diuretics, chemotherapeutic agents

A
  1. Overconsumption of dietary potassium.
  2. Excessive use of salt substitutes or potassium supplements.
  3. High-volume blood transfusion.
  4. Use of certain drugs.

Management of hyperkalemia?

A
  1. Stabilise the cardiac membrane in severe hyperkalaemia/ECG changes
  2. Intracellular potassium shift (Insulin/ salbutamol)
  3. Decrease total potassium
  4. Calcium gluconate > 7 meq/l 1.5-3 gms iv infusion over 2-5 minutes
