A
Plants grown in trays filled with gravel, cinders or other coarse materials, periodically flooded with nutrient solution.
Solution allowed to drain off after each flooding, may be reused as long as sufficient materials remain

WWII, US Army units successfully produced vegetables hydroponically at various bases overseas
