Asexual reproduction Flashcards
How many parents are needed for asexual reproduction?
One
What are offspring like?
Identical to parent and each other, they’re clones
How does asexual reproduction happen?
The process of mitosis when the cells are copied exactly
What is another name for mitosis?
Cell division
How do single celled organisms reproduce?
Copy their DNA and divide into 2 new cells
What can many flowering plants do?
Reproduce asexually (as well as sexually with flowers)
What is an example of a plant which can both asexually and sexually produce?
Strawberry plants 🍓
What is asexual reproduction like compared to sexual?
Faster and more likely to succeed
What can plants do?
Spread quickly in a suitable habitat
What is the problem with asexual reproduction?
All offspring are identical and are less able to afpdaot to changing habitats
What can some animals carry out?
Reproduce both sexually and asexually
Give an example of these animals
Worms and starfish
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction in animals and where does it work well?
Works well in stable unchanging environments and is energy efficient.
New individuals can rapidly colonise an area
What are the disadvantages of asexual reproduction in animals?
No genetic variation- offspring share same weakness
In changing environments the species is unable to adapt
