What does fertilisation mean?
The process when 2 gametes (sperm & egg) produced by 2 parents meet at fertilisation and their nuclei join combining their chromosomes
What can the male gamete do that the female can’t?
Move as they are tiny and can swim because they have a tail
Female eggs are larger and don’t move by themselves
Why is a fertilised egg unique?
Chromosomes that form the new individual come from different parents the fertilised eggs is unique
What does sexual reproduction result in?
Variation which is important for survival
What are the 2 types of fertilisation called?
Internal and external fertilisation
What do chromosomes carry?
Genetic information
When does fertilisation occur?
When sperm meets egg and their nuclei fuse together combining their chromosomes
