What is Hydrocephalus?
Excessive CSF accumulation caused by disturbance in the production, flow or absorption of CSF
What are causes of Hydrocephalus?
Posterior fossa tumours Cerebellar haemorrhages Colloid cysts in 3rd ventricle Ependymoma of 4th ventricle SAH Meningitis Trauma Aqueduct obstruction
What does CT show in hydrocephalus?
enlarged ventricles
How does hydrocephalus present?
if acute- signs of raised ICP
if chronic- gait disturbance, memory disturbance, incontinence and raised ICP
How do you manage Hydrocephalus?
Ventriculloperitoneal shunt
What is normal pressure hydrocephalus?
Enlarged ventricles with preserved CSF flow due to impaired reabsorption.
Also called chronic communicating hydrocephalus
What causes normal pressure hydrocephalus?
Idiopathic
What is the Halium Adams triad of normal pressure hydrocephalus?
Gait Disturbance
Cognitive Impairment
Urinary Incontinence
How do you treat normal pressure hydrocephalus?
Shunt.
