What is GBS?
A
Acute peripheral inflammatory progressive demyelinating polyneuropathy
More motor than sensory

What causes GBS?
A
Infection, usually campylobacter or EBV CMV VZV HIV

Symptoms of GBS
A
LMN flaccid weakness ascending for 4 weeks.
Loss of reflexes
Can lead to respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmia, hypo/hypertension, anxiety, PAIN
Autonomic dysfunction- sweat, increased HR, arrythmias

Investigations for GBS
A
EMG- slow conduction
LP- Protein

Treatment of GBS
A
Self limiting
IVIg, respiratory support, plasma exchange, physio, s/c LMWH as VTE protection
