Humanistic approach Flashcards
what is the humanistic approach?
Emphasis the study of the WHOLE person
Sees people as being active in their own development
Every individual is unique
Fulfilment in life is the basic human motive
What are the 4 main assumptions of the humanistic appraoch?
Every individual is unique
Free will
Holism
NOT measured through scientific method
Explain how every individual is unique as a main assumption of the humanistic approach
We are all different and there is no point in trying to generalise to groups
This way of viewing people is called idiographic
Explain free will as a main assumption of the humanistic approach
We have the ability to be in control of our behaviour
We have constraints (e.g. laws and social rules) but ultimately if we want to do something, we can chose to do it
So a person is responsible for their own behaviour
Explain holism as a main assumption of the humanistic approach
There is no point in looking at just one aspect of an individual
If we only consider one part, we may miss what is actually affecting them
DO NOT agree with focusing on childhood in therapy, but think the whole life should be looked at
Explain why the scientific method is NOT a way to measure behaviour as a key assumption of the humanistic approach
Humanistic psychology dos NOT consider itself to be a science
It argues that the scientific approach is too objective , when humans are subjective in the way they think and behave
So scientific method is not appropriate
