1
Q
What are the human sensory inputs that our brain make sense of our place in space?
A
Visual System
Vestibular System
Somatosensory System
2
Q
What are the visual illusions?
A
- Empty Field Myopia
- Upsloping or Narrow or Longer Runways
- False Horizon
- Black Hole Illusion
- Vection
- Autokinesis
- Vertigo
- Repeating Pattern
- Downsloping or Wider Runway

Q
When can you experience empty field myopia, and how do we prevent it from happening?
A
- Cloudless, clear sky with no meteorological features
- Dark, night sky with no observed reference
- Hazy conditions
- Strong sun glare or bright glaring light
- Flying over fully snow-covered terrain over desert or vast water bodies
Prevention:
- Looking at distant objects and light
- Using wingtips to create a visual reference
- Flying above layers of haze or smoke
- Using peripheral vision to detect movement
- Maintain proper scanning techniques

Q
Cones are located:
A
In the center of the eye
- See details
- Effective in the day
5
Q
Rods are located:
A
- Periphery of eye
- Movement
- 10,000x more sensitive
- 30 min to adapt to darkness
- 5,000’ recommended at night for hypoxia (AIM chapt. 7) 10k MSL during the day for hypoxia
6
Q
What are scanning techniques during the day:
A
- 10° increments along the window
7
Q
What is empty field myopia?
A
- Occurs when the eye is in a passive state of focal point
- When it has nothing to focus on, it settles automatically on an object
8
Q
What occurs during Autokinesis?
A
- Stationary small point of light seems to be moving
