HSP article (On Final Only) Flashcards
What two things can help diagnose HSP?
PT history + instrumented gait analysis (cannot always be confirmed by genetic testing)
What is HSP?
HSP is a degeneration of the corticospinal tract and (to a lesser extent) dorsal column fibers characterized by progressive muscle weakness, increased tone, and spasticity of the lower extremities resulting in the predominant clinical feature of gait disturbance
What is the critical issue of misdiagnosing someone with HSP as having CP
lack or referral to genetic specialist
those with HSP need to see genetic specialist
Is there a difference between HSP and CP in lower body Instrumented gait analysis
no
What have they found to be the main difference between HSP and CP in the IGA? (MOST IMPORTANT THING FROM THE ARTICLE PLS MEMORIZE THIS)
Upper body movement:
an atypically large excursion of lateral trunk flexion (typically bilaterally)
cervical translation (cervical retraction/protraction) which is movement of the chin in a forward and backward direction
Note: this is not diagnostic but rather indicates further testing needed if you see these
T or F: in the dr.bickleys study the majority of clinicians were confident in the ability to distinguish CP from HSP
F, 95% said no or unsure
