Why is understanding the psychology behind performance importance?
Focusing and balancing specific psychological influences like: Motivation, interests, concentration and anxiety management, can enhance athlete performance
What is motivation?
The internal state that ACTIVATES, DIRECTS AND Sustains the behaviours of individuals to achieve athlete’s full potential
What are the important factors to consider to improve one’s motivation?
Recognising individual effort
Supporting belief in abilities
Good work ethic
Positive reinforcement + encouragement
What is positive motivation?
Driven by positive reinforcement behaviours
Factors that are desirable that builds confidence, resilience over a sustained effort
What is negative motivation?
Improvement out of fear and consequences which are undesirable or to be avoided
Could result in low self esteem, put pressure and only work for short term motivation
What is intrinsic motivation?
Comes within the individual such as interest, goals, expectations, fear and desires
What is extrinsic motivation?
Occurs when the external state is modified from outside the person
Focuses on gains to challenges individuals’ values
What is anxiety?
Predominantly a psychological process when confronted with threatening situations
Unpredictable nature of performance or the uncertainty of outcome may contribute of anxiety
What is Trait Anxiety?
Athletes general level of stress from how one have conditioned to RESPOND + MANAGE stress –> Lowers concentration and performance (Muscular contractions) –> Motivation decreases
What is State Anxiety?
The state of heightened emotions (fear + danger) which could result in nervousness, sweating, increase HR and nausea
Certain level could benefit as it provides adrenaline to drive them
What is stress?
The physiological and psychological response the body makes when demands are placed on it, triggering a fight or flight
What could one’s sources of stress reflect?
Past experiences, routines, expectation and support
What are some factors that produce stress?
Personal, competition (opponents), social (coach) and physical (skills) pressure
What are traits of stress/anxiety?
Increase blood supply, glucose production, sweat production and muscular contraction
What is Arousal?
Arousal is a specific level of anxiety where a physiological process which could facilitate or hinder performance
