How Memory Works (Module 31) Flashcards
Encoding
Input of Memory
Visual encoding
Picture images
Acoustic encoding
Sound of words
Semantic encoding
Meaning of words
Storage
File system of memories
Retrieval
Getting information out of memory.
Parallel Processing
We encode numerous sensory experiences simultaneously.
Sensory Memory
Initial recording of sensory information.
Function - holds sensory information long enough to be processed or transferred to the center of the brain.
Iconic Memory / Echoic Memory
Iconic = visual
Echoic = auditory
Working Memory (Short-Term Memory
-Conscious processing of information
-Holds 7+/- 2 items
-20-30 seconds
Long-Term Memory
A relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system.
Explicit memory (Declarative)
Facts and experiences that one can consciously know and decare (conscious recall).
Implicit memory (Procedural)
Memories of how to do things; procedures (without conscious recall).
Effortful Processing
Requires attention and conscious effort, focused and paying attention.
Herman Ebbinghaus and Rehearsal (Repetition)
The amount we remember correlates with time sprent learning.
Forgetting Curve - memories of meaningless information are lost shortly after learning.
