Housing, Facilities, Management and Occupation. Flashcards

1
Q

How does air pressure relate to animal housing?

A

Hyper pressure is used to keep air flowing out the facility. Hypo pressure is used to keep air in the facility. Hyper is typically for barrier units, whilst hypo is for units with risk of contaminating the outside world.

Q

Effects/consequences of occupational hazards in animal laboratory work?

A

Allergy = development of allergy and symptoms relatedd to allergy.

Physical injuries = Infections from bites. Sharp objects.

Zoonosis =

Harmful substances = Infectious agents from experiments, Viruses, toxins, determinstic effects (dead skin cells etc) and stochastic effects (cancer) of radioactive isotopes.

Q

Diagnosis of effects of occupational hazards in animal laboratory work?

A

Allergy = Allergy symptoms. Skin testing. Blood testing.

Physical injuries = pain swelling, obvious if bleeding is there.

Zoonosis =

Harmful substances = pretty self explanatory

Q

Avoidance of hazards in animal laboratory work?

A

allergy = reduction of exposure and levels of allergens. treatment to improve symptoms. don´t bring allergens outside the animal facility.

Physical injuries = clean bites. antibiotics. Proper animal handling. Proper handling of tools.

Zoonosis = Depends on the way the disease spreads, but generally

Harmful substances = Warning labels, biosafety hoods, proper protective gear, good needle practise, radioactive precautions (correct transport, protection, expertise, waste etc)
