Ethics, Welfare 3Rs Flashcards
Name the five views on our duties towards animal welfare:
1) utalitarian
2) contractarian
3) animal rights
4) Relational view
5) Respect for nature view
Define the utalitarian view
Animals deserve moral concern. Optimize the amount of gain. Choose the option that will give the greatest amount of gain for animals and humans.
Define the contractarian view
Ethical decisions is made on the basis of agreement. Something only holds moral value if it´s agreed upon.
Define the animal rights view
Good results can´t justify evil means. Every animal has the right to be treated with respect. Different views depending on the severity of the belief.
Define the relational view
Morality grows out of our relationship with that animal/person. If a relationship between an animal and a person is important to that person, it has moral value, and it is therefore wrong violate this.
Define the respect for nature view
Species of animals have intrinsic value. Hard on genetic modifying. Important to keep the species alive.
What is animal welfare?
1) biological function
- physical parameters, offspring, mortality etc
2) philosophical
3) hybrid views
What are the five freedoms?
1) freedom from hunger and thirst
2) Freedom from discomfort
3) Freedom from pain, injuri and disease.
4) Freedom to express normal behaviour.
5) Freedom from fear and distress
What are the three Rs?
1) replacement
2) refinement
3) reduction
What is the purpose of the three Rs?
To minimize animal suffering.
What types of replacement are there?
Complete (in silico, human volunteers, in vitro) Relative replacement (established animal cell lines, animals not in the directive etc)
How can you reduce?
- improved experimental design
- improved methods
- sharing data
how can you refine?
- improve methods
- analgesia/stesia
- training animals
- optimizing pain recognition methods
- environmental enrichment
- cognitive enrivhment
