Hot Viruses Flashcards
Describe the structure of Bunyavirdae
Enveloped negative, ssRNA viruses
What are the 2 hot viruses?
Bunyaviridae and Filovirus
How many different types of Bunyaviridae are there?
250
What are most Bunyavirdae and what do they cause?
Most are arthropod borne and cause persistent, nonlethal, lifelong, infections in their natural wild animal host
Describe Filoviruses
Single stranded negative RNA viruses
What do filoviruses target?
primates
What do filoviruses cause?
Hemorrhagic fevers, characterized by massive bleeding from every orifice of the body
Is filovirus serious?
Yes, shockingly lethal, with very high mortality rates
What part of the world has endemic Filovirus?
Africa
What is the natural host for filovirus?
Natural host is unknown, but very recent evidence points to the fruit bat
What are the 2 general filoviruses?
Ebola virus and Marburg virus
